This expansion is big for Wawa as they continue to build in their home market as they also continue to expand into new states. Unfortunately while they do this as well as other chains that are going into new markets it is killing the small guys. Not only the franchise owners of 7-Eleven stores that have to compete but even the small business Independent stores. These guys work in their stores open to close to provide for their families. It’s definitely becoming harder and you can see that by the drastic decrease in independent retail accounts since 2020. There’s been 20k+ accounts that have closed in the independent convenience retail channel and still going. While so many say support small business they seldom thing of the c&g channel. A couple of the main drivers of this in my opinion, Covid has driven the need for cleanliness and people feel the chains have a cleaner store. While a good reason but how clean are these chains? Have you checked their health department scores?? I know theirs time I go into a restroom at a chain and they are absolutely horrendous. Now my other opinion, a lot of these independents that don’t have thin “G” in C&G have to face the facts that “one stop shop” is a necessity. People’s time is more valuable than ever. If you don’t mind share my thoughts and help grow my audience.

Dollar General continues to expand its store footprint across the country. The discounter celebrated the opening of its 20,000th store, a DG Market location in Alice, Texas. What I love about this announcement more than anything, is that HMV is a brand I grew up with; in fact I would hate to think how much of my student loan was spent on vinyl, DVD's and other items. Of course the way we consume media changed, and it's no lie that HMV took a couple of big beatings, but they reinvented themselves and are now getting to enjoy the resurgence of people wanting to listen to music via record players once more. It makes me really smile, and I love getting the chance to pop into their stores when I can.The second part of this announcement that excites me is that many retailers are growing again - even with the tough economic climate and the changes in the way consumers buy. If you would have guessed McDonald's has the most retail locations in the country, you’d be wrong. According to Crittenden Research Inc., the retail tenant with the most locations across America is FedEx stores with 56,164 locations. A distant No. 2 is Subway with 21,352 locations. No. 3 is U-Haul with 20,762 locations. No. 4 is Dollar General with 19,022 locations and No. 5 is Starbucks with 15,905 locations.

Can J.C. Penny make it back as a private company and was a $1B investment in tech, stores, and Customer Experience worth it? This week, Simon Property Group CEO, David Simon, said thatJCPenney could look at opening more locations even though sales and profitability are down. Since coming out of bankruptcy in 2020 the retailer has been steadying the ship as a private company. Last summer, the retailerannounced a $1 billion investmentin upgrading its tech, stores, and #customerexperience, Music to my ears. I wrote about J.C. Penny in my book "The Art of Seducing Your Customers". I discuss how Ron Johnson, CEO from 2011-2013, helped the situation go from bad to worse if possible. He uprooted what loyal customers knew and loved and it backed fired. Incredibly, the brand held on and now under new management and privately held (Simon Property Group and Brookfield Property Partners) it appears to have a real shot. **Jollyes reports record Christmas trading as it looks ahead to 100th store opening**Jollyes- The Pet People has reported record Christmas trading with a like-for-like sales increase of 13% in the five weeks to 31 December.Total sales grew by 25% in the period as the pet retailer continued to invest in value and its services.Jollyes delivered its strongest ever seven-day trading period in the final week before Christmas when it attracted almost 45% more customers than in the same week in the previous year. On a like-for-like basis, customer numbers were up by 26%.In addition to the festive trading figures, the retailer has announced that it will be launching new stores in Belfast Connswater, Newport and Rotherham in February and March.
