Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead Is Perfect for Those Looking to Laugh This Halloween (2022)

The zombie apocalypse subgenre of horror is one of the most popular of all time. Over the years, there have been many projects across all forms of media depicting the struggle and terror that comes from trying to survive one, most notably The Walking Dead.

However, over the past few years, a new series has premiered, subverting every expectation and trope commonly found in zombie stories, and that is the manga known as Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead. Choosing to go down a more comedic route rather than the tried, true and by now redundant scary one, Zom 100 has managed to stand out among the crowd of zombie stories as something wholly unique.

What is Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead?

Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead Is Perfect for Those Looking to Laugh This Halloween (1)

Zom 100 is the story of an overworked, underappreciated office worker named Akira Tendo. As someone from a small town in the sticks and a recent college graduate, he starts a new job, extremely excited to begin his career in the big city. Not long after he starts, he realizes that his job is becoming his whole life, with him rarely going home due to working in the office until he passes out at his desk.

Out of depression and desperation, he stays at his job hoping that things will one day get better, but also because he has fallen in love with a secretary that works in his office. Unfortunately, things never get any better for Akira, and he frequently hears the woman having sex with the CEO of his workplace in his office. After three years of working at his office, his spirit is completely broken and he's pretty much given up any hope of things getting any better.

After one of the few nights when he is able to sleep in his own apartment, he discovers that a zombie apocalypse started while he was asleep, with almost everyone in his city having become one. While at first he is terrified, mainly because he's afraid of being late to work and getting yelled at by his supervisor, he realizes almost immediately that he doesn't have to go to work anymore due to the current circumstances. This fact is so wonderful that he loses pretty much any sense of fear he had and feels true joy. Ironically, in a world where the undead are rampaging, Akira feels totally alive for the first time in years.

Now that he has no real responsibilities due to the world essentially ending, rather than stressing about the "finer details," Akira decides that he is going to live his life to the fullest. To accomplish this, he decides to make a bucket list of all the things he wants to do before he eventually dies. On his journey of going through his list, he picks up old friends and new ones, and together, they go on adventures they always dreamed of but never made a reality due to the limitations of their previous circumstances.

What Makes Zom 100 So Good?

Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead Is Perfect for Those Looking to Laugh This Halloween (3)

Zom 100 is one of the few zombie stories out there that makes the most of its premise by going against every established norm of the horror genre. While the characters struggle on many occasions with trying to survive in this zombie dystopia, most of the time, it's because they went out and were trying to have fun during the apocalypse. Instead of living in fear of their own deaths, the characters refuse to let the spark of hope and joy they recently acquired go out due to the current circumstances.

It doesn't hurt that the main cast is incredibly charming and likable, with each member having their individual backstories and motivations for joining Akira on his journey to live his life to the fullest despite the danger of being eaten alive. They all had dreams that they weren't able to fulfill before due to constraints placed on them by society and its expectations of them, but now that society has all but collapsed, they can finally do as they please. Almost anyone reading this manga can likely relate to this idea on some level, making the characters likable and the story so much more fun and uplifting than it otherwise might have been.

What's so interesting about the series is that the biggest fear the characters have has very little to do with the zombies but much more about things returning to normal. At one point, Akira is put into a situation with other survivors that brings up all the old insecurities he had at his old job, with his will almost getting breaking again for the second time in his life. The fear he has of things going back to "normal" is clear as day, and darkly ironic considering he tends to face hordes of zombies with a smile.

Zom 100 makes the most of its premise, crafting a very sharp-edged commentary about the plight of the working man. Before the zombie apocalypse started, Akira and his companions were all essentially zombies. They moved about their day and worked at their joyless jobs for seemingly no reason other than it was what they were supposed to do. They were alive but completely dead on the inside, with the world itself seemingly trapping them into living out that fate. With no world, however, there are no rules or limitations, meaning they have the freedom they always craved but gave up on ever actually having.

This is what makes the bucket list itself so wonderful, as it ranges from the deeply emotional to the incredibly ridiculous. This aspect of the series is incredibly relatable due to how everyone has different dreams that don't necessarily make sense to others but that the person still wishes to accomplish. Akira, for example, writes down at one point that he wants to be a superhero, which is a pretty impossible but understandable wish to have. How does he accomplish this goal? He ends up putting on a diving suit and saving a group of survivors from a zombie shark.

Another thing on the bucket list is that he wants to confess his feelings to a girl he's in love with. To do that, he goes and finds the secretary from his old job's address. While his goal is to tell her he loves her and hopefully save her in the process, when he arrives, he sees both her and the CEO of his old workplace naked and completely zombified. While obviously disappointed by this, Akira still tells her his feelings. The outcome isn't what he wanted, but it still helps bring him the closure he needs and highlights just how wholesome and uplifting the series is.

However, as great as the story and writing both are, the art is what brings it all together. The characters are all given distinctive designs, with the zombies drawn to be scary and horrifying too. Interestingly enough, the art is at its scariest when depicting the fear the characters have when forced to confront their old lives, which is showcased especially through Akira. His smile when he is genuinely happy is drawn in such a way that it is infectious when seen, which is why his fake smiles hit so hard. It would be a crime not to mention just how cool and hilarious the zombie shark is to see in the manga.

While Zom 100 is a relatively new series, it's still one that's well worth anyone's time. It's a zombie manga that goes out of its way to show just how fun the apocalypse can be if one were to look at it from the right perspective. With great characters, beautiful artwork and a surprisingly touching story about being oneself and not giving up on one's dreams, Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead is a book that can't be recommended enough, especially given the Halloween season.
