Wreckreation Studio in Crisis: Three Fields Entertainment Faces Closure - What Went Wrong? (2026)

Bold claim: Three Fields Entertainment faces potential collapse as the entire studio sits on redundancy notice. And this is the part people often overlook—the financial lifeline from publishers can be the difference between keeping a studio afloat and watching it wind down.

Three Fields Entertainment, the studio behind Wreckreation and founded by Burnout veterans, has informed its staff that they may be made redundant. CEO Fiona Sperry announced the news in a LinkedIn post, explaining that without ongoing publisher enthusiasm or funding, the studio cannot sustain itself in its current form. Wreckreation, which arrived in October, has not generated revenue for the foreseeable future, Sperry noted. On Steam, the game’s player count reached a peak of 199 in October according to SteamDB.

Even though THQ Nordic published Wreckreation, Sperry shared that Three Fields has largely funded development out of pocket this year, including resources allocated to post-launch content.

“Without the enthusiasm or financial support from our publisher to continue development, we simply cannot sustain the studio in its current form. Making this decision has been unbelievably painful,” Sperry wrote.

She added that this moment is heartbreaking for the team, especially given the pipeline of features, updates, and creative ideas they planned to bring to Wreckreation. Much of this work is highlighted in a video accompanying the message, illustrating the potential they believed could strengthen the game and its community.

Sperry expressed a glimmer of hope: by publicly sharing the team’s work, someone might recognize the game’s potential and an opportunity could still emerge. Even if that doesn’t happen, the post serves as a testament to the studio’s vision, as well as the passion and capability of its small team. She reiterated her belief in Wreckreation’s potential and in the talent behind it.

Background: Three Fields Entertainment was established in Hampshire in 2014 by Fiona Sperry and Alex Ward, founders who previously co-created Criterion, the studio behind the Burnout series. Ward often served as creative director across many Burnout titles. Prior releases from Three Fields include Dangerous Golf, Lethal Zone, and Danger Zone.

Controversial point: The reliance on publisher funding to sustain studios without a steady revenue stream raises questions about the viability of small, independent studios in today’s market. Is publisher backing truly essential for long-term survival, or should studios diversify funding models and revenue streams to weather funding gaps?
