Can anyone explain the different uses of "sud y sur"?

Hola!Sur and Sud are both used to define "the south"...in spanish we , for example have the words...."America del sur" and "Sudamerica"...both mean "South america" and the first one literally means "America from the south or southern America"....I will recommend you to use always the word "SUR" , but again, "SUD" its a correct word.saludos desde Mexico!
