On June 5, 2019, Niki Ghofranian and her sister Ritta Nielsen, celebrating their 55th and 66th birthdays respectively, found themselves locked inside Dunstaffnage Castle, a 14th-century fortress in Scotland. The sisters, of Scottish descent, had always dreamed of exploring Scotland’s rolling hills, dramatic lochs, and ancient castles. Their visit to Dunstaffnage, a former stronghold of the MacDougall clan, was meant to be a highlight of their trip. But as the sun began to set, they realized the castle’s gate was padlocked shut, leaving them stranded.
