Why are they called ButterBurger? ›

What a lot of folks don't know is why it's called a ButterBurger. We call our ButterBurgers “ButterBurgers,” not because they've been cooked, marinated, dunked, fried or drizzled with butter but because we lightly butter the crown of the bun for an extra touch of goodness.

Culver's co-founders Craig and Lea Culver, and Craig's parents George and Ruth Culver built their restaurant business by following this principle. But there is a story to tell on how this all came to be, one that starts on the banks of the Wisconsin River in a southern Wisconsin town called Sauk City.

Butter burgers are hamburgers topped with butter, either directly on the patty, or on the bun. Likely invented in Wisconsin, they remain popular in some northern parts of the midwestern United States, and are the principal item of Wisconsin-based fast food restaurant Culver's.

One of the lesser-known regional delicacies to come out of Wisconsin is the Butter Burger. Solly's Grille, a diner north of Milwaukee that was founded in 1936, claims to be the originator of this style, in which butter is placed directly on the beef patty.

The name Dirty Burger forms from the definition of dirty food which is traditionally regarded as junk food or fast food, but is made with high quality ingredients & added elements such as exotic sauces.

Since 1936, the venerable Solly's Grille in Milwaukee has been the prized purveyor of the butter burger, which is one-third-pound sirloin patty topped with what seems like a more or less equal amount of sweet and creamy Wisconsin butter.

Early years. In 1950, Harmon Dobson and Paul Burton were looking to open a hamburger restaurant. Dobson's goal was to "make a better burger that took two hands to hold and tasted so good that when you took a bite you would say 'What a burger!' " In June 1950, Dobson was granted the Whataburger trademark.

The term 'hamburger' comes from Hamburg in Germany, where a minced beef style dish was first created. All of our burgers are made from whole cuts of 100% British and Irish beef, with nothing added except a pinch of salt and pepper after cooking.

Why? Because in the US, a burger is a name that's only used for a dish that contains a ground meat patty (be it beef, fish, chicken or otherwise) between two buns. If it's just a whole piece of meat, or haloumi or a large mushroom, for example, it's still a sandwich to an American.

“The Elvis”, the inspiration for our Peanut Butter Banana Burger, was named for Elvis Presley. The sandwich that Elvis gave his namesake was a favorite of the popular singer. It was one of his many food cravings. The king was known for his food cravings.
