Scientists have developed a groundbreaking bullet-proof fiber that surpasses the strength and thinness of Kevlar, a long-standing industry standard. This new composite material, detailed in the journal Matter, is not only stronger and tougher but also more effective at stopping bullets, all while being significantly thinner than Kevlar. The research team, led by Jin Zhang from Peking University, China, has been working on this innovation for six years, addressing a common challenge in materials science: the trade-off between strength and toughness. By combining a heterocyclic aramid, a high-performance fiber similar to Kevlar, with treated long carbon nanotubes, they created a super-strong and lightweight fiber, thinner than a human hair. The key to its success lies in the precise alignment of the aramid chains and carbon nanotubes, achieved through a multi-step stretching process, ensuring the components lock together tightly, preventing slippage during impact and enhancing energy absorption without failure. The new material's dynamic strength and energy absorption capabilities far exceed those of existing fibers, setting a new record of 706.1 megajoules per cubic meter. When woven into fabric, it demonstrates superior anti-ballistic performance compared to current protective fabrics.
