  • It makes me sad to read the article "Some in Potomac Shudder at Affordable Housing" {Metro, May 17}. That some people in an upper-bracket community feel that families in the $30,000-$40,000 income range will bring down their neighborhood is exactly what the recent riots were all about -- stereotypes, economic oppression, social injustices and the like. Having worked with the Montgomery Housing Authority representing developers who have to comply with the Moderately Priced Dwelling Unit program, I can say that a lot of planning and hard work goes into every aspect -- including site, materials, units, price and choice of a family -- of an MPDU project. And believe me, most developers do not zealously come to the negotiating table but do so because certain community leaders had the foresight to implement the MPDU program in Montgomery County.
