Buonpane Family Love of Pie

Thanksgiving just would not be the same without one pumpkin pie. Not all of the kids love pumpkin pie but Jim and I remember our mothers and grandmothers making a traditional homemade pumpkin pie.

Now that I am the grandma I am keeping up the tradition of having a pumpkin pie for Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner. But we now have younger adults who ask for all the best pies.

Each year now our kids ask for apple pie. I have a traditional apple recipe and our new favorite is a Dutch Apple Crumble Pie. And our new family favorite Pecan Pie.

Pumpkin Puree from a Pie Pumpkin

When we were first married I would buy a pumpkin pie pumpkin for fresh pumpkin. It took some doing to peel and then boil as you would a potato or you can bake in the oven like acorn squash.

Cut in half and scoop out the seeds (save them for later). Put the pumpkin halfs on a baking pan cut side down and bake at 400° for 40 to 45 minutes. Let the halves cool, scoop out the inside, and put in a food processor or blender and puree.

Homemade does not mean that everything has to be made from scratch. But soon after I became a mother and had little ones in the house I used the basic Libby canned pumpkin. (not pumpkin pie filling mix).
