Congratulations, Banneker, my Banneker. Young Rhonda would have this to say about Banneker: 😩 Why is my bookbag so heavy?😩 Typing class at 7:30am? Really?😩 AP History at 7:45a then AGAIN during the school day? 😳 200 volunteer hours???😫 A 25 page senior thesis?Adult Rhonda would say: 🙏🏽Thank God for digital. :)🙏🏽Thank GOD (and Ms. Tynes) that I can type. ✊🏽AP History taught me to think critically and understand how Black and Brown people shaped democracy. 🥰 Volunteer hours at the Children's Defense Fund taught me to the beginnings of organizing, advocacy, and political awareness.😁 construct and argument? College senior thesis? Memo to senior leadership? Say less. #dcps #school #educator #equityHarvard Graduate School of Education

My grandmother earned her high school diploma after her 70th birthday so she could model for the adult learners she was teaching to read, and fulfill her dream of finishing secondary school. My mother earned her masters degree after her 50th birthday so she could inch her way up the pay scale to better provide for her family. She went to night school after teaching full time, preparing dinner, and managing her family and household. She was also the first in her family to go to college. I learned at a young age that access to education is inequitable, hard won, and precious. And it is transformative. Shortly after I earned my second masters degree, I started mentoring men behind bars who were pursuing bachelors degrees while incarcerated. Fast forward a few years, and I've had the privilege of seeing two of these students graduate with college degrees and be released from prison. I could not fit in this column all that education has given these men, neither can I adequately describe what their education allows us to enjoy of them - Their tenacity! Their industry! Their creativity! Their humanity.Education is a "human right." We must protect it, share it, and expand it where ever we can. What more can we do? A couple ideas - and you can share more in the comments:-Support access to higher ed for individuals who are incarcerated-Volunteer with an org that provides mentoring to learners behind bars (e.g. Partakers)-Join a school task force or parent teacher cause that champions the right of every student to receive an optimal education-Read as much as you can with your children. Read a wide variety of literature from many different points of view. This is your invitation to be well, read widely, learn to do better, and thrive together.Join my coaching circle (starting tomorrow 9.20!) and learn how you can gain freedom, know more, and thrive: https://lnkd.in/g6YvAdmM #literacy #education #prisoneducation #collegebehindbars #partakers #read #accesstoeducation

📚🗳️ Civic education is the centerpiece of the renewal of democratic attitudes from generation to generation in Western societies. Yet, in Central and Eastern Europe it remains particularly weak or even amiss.🗣️💡Watch our discussion between Louisa Slavkova and Maja Kurilic from THE CIVICS Innovation Hub, and Daniel Hegedus from the Engaging Central Europe program of the German Marshall Fund of the United States about the importance of civic education in building democratic resilience 💪 in Europe.🔗 https://lnkd.in/eyXNTGPw

I appreciate this piece elevating the multi-faceted work that #CommunitySchools do and the multiple sources of support that keep them going. Specifically, I appreciate this description of what community schools do—"a community school engages the entire school and its community in providing students the targeted support and resources they need to succeed in the classroom: from helping families navigate access to health care, mental health services, food, and the internet, to providing workforce training, literacy development, tutoring, and safe after-school programming." And, I appreciate how this piece highlights the interplay of nonprofit, federal, and state funding that has helped more students benefit from this evidence-based approach to education—including the federal Full-Service Community Schools grants.
