| Generally speaking, Korean food is considered very healthy. The reason for this is because of the sheer amount of vegetables in every Korean dish. Some meals are made entirely without any kind of meat at all. Koreans have somehow someway made vegetable dishes that you would be ecstatic to serve to your friends. Korea can be a vegetarians’ paradise. As this is the case, there usually will be plenty of side dishes that one can eat even if meat is on the main menu but Koreans tend to place things in your bowl and tell you to eat. This is them just trying to be good hosts but if you are a vegetarian and someone places a piece of meat in your bowl, we have the following phrase to tell that person, you are a vegetarian. |
| The phrase I am a vegetarian is, 저는 채식주의자입니다 (jeoneun chaesikjuuijaimnida). One more time, it’s 저는 채식주의자입니다 (jeoneun chaesikjuuijaimnida). By syllable, 저-는 채-식-주-의-자-입-니-다 (jeo-neun chae-sik-ju-ui-ja-im-ni-da). The first word of the phrase is 저 (jeo) which is a humbling way of saying, I. What follows after that is 는 (neun), a topic marker. These two are spoken together. So, let’s hear them together, 저는 (jeoneun). What follows after that is 채식주의자 (chesikjuuija). This means vegetarian. So let’s hear it again, 채식주의자 (chesikjuuija). And the last part of the phrase is, 입니다 (imnida). And this is the copula which means I am. One more time, it’s 입니다 (imnida). What we literally have is, I vegetarian am, this is translated as, I am a vegetarian. Let’s do the phrase one more time. 저는 채식주의자입니다 (jeoneun chaesikjuuijaimnida). If that’s a little difficult, we can shorten it and take out I. We can say vegetarian am. That in Korean would be 채식주의자입니다 (chaesikjuuijaimnida). |
| Next, we can simply say, I don’t eat meat. This in Korean would be 고기 안 먹어요 (gogi an meogeoyo). One more time, it’s 고기 안 먹어요 (gogi an meogeoyo). And now by syllable, 고-기 안 먹-어-요 (go-gi an meo-geo-yo). The first word of the phrase is 고기 (gogi). This means meat and it can mean beef, pork, chicken and any other kind of meat out there. One more time, it’s 고기 (gogi). What follows after that is 안 (an). This means not. One more time, it’s 안 (an). And lastly we have 먹어요 (meogeoyo). This means eat. One more time, it’s 먹어요 (meogeoyo). So altogether, the phrase we literally have is, meat not eat. This is translated as I don’t eat meat. Let’s do it one more time. 고기 안 먹어요 (gogi an meogeoyo). Now, we can substitute 고기 (gogi) meat with anything else you don’t eat. |
| For starters, we can say, I don’t eat eggs. The word for egg in Korean is 계란 (gyeran). The phrase we now have is 계란 안 먹어요 (gyeran an meogeoyo). This means egg not eat. One more time, it’s 계란 안 먹어요 (gyeran an meogeoyo). So whatever you don’t eat, just place it in front of the phrase 안 먹어요 (an meogeoyo) not eat. One more time, it’s 안 먹어요 (an meogeoyo). |
