Hayward Pool Heater Troubleshooting (2024)

When it comes to troubleshooting Hayward pool heater error codes, there's not too much difference between the problem solving process for other gas-fired heaters, made by Jandy, Pentair or Raypak. The components of a Hayward pool heater are also similar to gas heaters made by other manufacturers.

Gas fired pool heaters are similar to a home gas-fired furnace, with the main difference being that a pool heater heats water and a home furnace heats air. Big difference, but other than that, they operate pretty much the same!

Troubleshooting Hayward Gas Heater Error Codes

Below is the troubleshooting guide for Hayward pool heater error codes. Error codes show up on the digital screen of the H-Series H150, H200, H250, H300, H350, and H400 gas models.Work through the chart below if your heater displays the following error codes.

CodeDescriptionInformation
bDInternal fault/power-up errorOn initial trial for ignition. Automatic reset is immediate once the gas valve relay check results are acceptable.
bDGas valve sensed as “ON” errorIf valve is open when it should be closed the heater will shut down and go into lockout. Blower will operate until error condition is corrected. Automatic restart 2 minutes after error is corrected.
bDGas valve sensed as “OFF” errorIf valve is closed but flame is sensed the blower will run for 5 seconds, then start a new ignition sequence. If error occurs 10 times during a call for heat the control will go into lockout. Automatic reset is 60 minutes.
bDData retrieval errorIf control input data is corrupts, the heater will shut down and lockout.
HFFlame present with gas valve “OFF” errorIf flame is sensed with the gas valve off the control will go into lockout. The blower will run until error condition is corrected. When corrected, control will run blower for 5 s then automatically restart after 2 minutes.
PFElectrical supply wiring errorThis code will display if 120V polarity is reversed, low voltage is detected, or if the ground path is not sufficient. Reset is immediate after error is corrected.
AOBlower vacuum switch open errorIf the blower prover switch does not close after the blower starts the control will stop the ignition trial go into lockout. The blower will continue to run. Automatic reset is immediate after the switch closes
AOBlower vacuum switch open when expected closed errorIf the blower prover switch opens unexpectedly during operation the control will shut down and attempt to re-light. If the switch does not close after the blower starts the control will go into lockout with the blower running. Automatic reset is immediate after error is corrected.
AOBlower vacuum switch open during post-purge errorIf the blower prover switch opens during the postpurge cycle (heater is not firing) the control will display the error code. The post-purge cycle will be completed once the blower prover switch closes.
ACBlower vacuum switch closed when expected open errorIf the blower prover switch is closed before blower start-up the control will not start the blower. Automatic reset is immediate when the switch opens
IOIgniter open errorIf the control is not in lockout and senses that the igniter circuit is open when the blower is running the control will turn off the blower and go into lockout. Automatic restart 2 min after error is corrected.
SFThermistor errorAn excessive temperature difference between the two thermistors (5 °F or more) or an “out of bounds” condition on both sensors (less than 10°F or greater than 180°F) will result in the error code. Automatic restart is 2 minutes after the error is corrected.
HSWater Temperature Sensing Error
SbKeypad button stuck closed errorIf one of the keypad buttons is closed (or pressed) for more than 30 s the error code will be displayed but the control will continue to function. The error code will be cleared when the condition is corrected.
IFIgnition failure errorIf the control exceeds the maximum number of ignition retries or recycles the heater will shut down and go into lockout. Automatic reset is 60 minutes.
CECommunication errorIf communication between the ignition board and the display board is not established within 3 s of power-up an error will be displayed. After communication is established, if it is lost for 30 s, the error will be displayed. The error code will be cleared upon a valid data exchange between boards
LOLimit string open errorIf the limit string opens the heater shuts down and goes into lockout. Automatic restart is 2 minutes after the error condition is corrected and the limit string closes. See below for more detail
EEEEPROM ERRORAn error was detected in the ignition control circuit board.

FAQs

Why is my Hayward pool heater not kicking on? ›

It could be due to less obvious issues. Low gas supply, failing pilot generator, a bad gas valve, slight blockage in the pilot assembly. If you are unable to light the pilot, visit your local Hayward dealer for guidance.

How to fix Hayward pool heater error code if? ›

There are different models of Hayward units, some use a spark igniter, some use a glow igniter. Most of the time, the IF code means that the igniter has failed, the gas valve has failed, or on units with flame sensing technology, the flame sensor is dirty and needs to be cleaned with sandpaper.

How do I reset my pool heater? ›

Reset your pool heater by flipping the breaker switch in the electrical panel to “off” and then “on.” Your breaker may be located in a disconnect box near your pool heater or in the breaker panel in your home.

Why does my Hayward pool heater keep turning off? ›

Why does my heater “cycle” on and off? Inadequate water flow caused by a dirty filter or closed valves. External bypass needs adjusting. Reversed water connections.

Why won't my pool heater kick on? ›

Check the Filter

The most common cause of swimming pool heaters refusing to start up is a dirty swimming pool filter. A dirty filter or pump basket can restrict the water flow so much that the heater simply can't work.

What would cause a pool heater to not ignite? ›

Tripped circuit breaker: The most common reason for a pool heater not turning on is a tripped circuit breaker or blown fuse. Check your breaker box and reset any tripped breakers or replace any blown fuses. ✓ Low water flow: If there isn't enough water flowing through the heater, it won't turn on as a safety measure.

How do I fix the BO code on my Hayward pool heater? ›

bo Bypass Operation mode This is NOT an error code. If the user sees “bo” in the display, the TCM is in Bypass Operation mode. To exit “Bypass Operation” mode, select “STANDBY” mode, then press and hold both the “DOWN” and “MODE” buttons for 3 sec- onds (until the “bo” code is no longer displayed).

Where does check valve go on pool heater? ›

Check valves should be installed before the pool's outlet control valve and after the pump itself. This positioning ensures that water won't return to the pool.

How to diagnose a pool heater? ›

The first place to check is your filter. If the filter is dirty, it can be reducing the air pressure, which will force the pressure switch to shut your heater off. Clean your filter, turn up the thermostat and give it another try. The next place to check is the shut-off valve if you have a gas heater.

Why is my pool heat pump on but not heating? ›

Check that your heat pump is getting sufficient water flow.

Without constant, sufficient water flow, your heat pump cannot transfer heat from the refrigerant to your swimming pool. Insufficient water flow will not only lengthen your heating time, but also cause damage to your heat pump's internal components.

Can a pool heater get clogged? ›

Your pool heater contains a filter that prevents contaminants from circulating through the filter and causing a problem. However, if the filter becomes clogged, it can prevent the correct amount of water from passing through. Without sufficient water pressure, your heater won't be able to work.

Why does my pool heater kick on then shut off? ›

The most common cause of a heater that cycles on and off could be inadequate water flow to a dirty filter or closed valve. (See information on How to Backwash a DE Filter or Clean a Cartridge Filter).

What is the if code on the Hayward pool heater? ›

Code IF is ignition failure. That usually means insufficient gas pressure. The most obvious possibility is that the gas line is still turned off from last winter.

How many years should a pool heater last? ›

The average life of a pool heater is between 15 and 25 years with regular usage and proper maintenance, but there are various factors that impact that projection.

Why is my heat pump not turning on in my pool? ›

Make sure your breaker has not tripped and that the disconnect switch of your heat pump (located adjacent to your unit, typically on a wall or a post) is turned on. Ensure that your heat pump is getting sufficient water flow.

How long does it take for a Hayward pool heater to heat up? ›

The initial start up heating time will vary depending on the size of the pool and the outdoor temperature. While there are other factors that will increase or decrease the heat up time, these two factors are most critical. In most situations an initial heat up period of 4 to 5 days can be expected.

Why is my pool blower not working? ›

Check the wire powering the air switch and check the switch for continuity. If no power, check the wire leading to the switch for continuity and replace as needed. If you have power but do not get proper switching action, replace the switch. If none of these things fix the problem, the blower may need to be replaced.

Does a pool heater only run when the pump is running? ›

This means that they will only operate when your pool pump is turned on and water is flowing through the heat pump. You can therefore control when your heat pump operates simply by using a time clock on your water pump. Some heat pump models also have a timer built into the digital control panel.
