This can be made from ingredients you have already. Nowadays no one wants to go out to the food store any more than is absolutely necessary.

This may have been answered in the past, but I didn't need it then. I am on a salt restricted diet. I need a dry onion soup recipe that I can make without putting in the salt. Hope you can help me out. TY

Onion Soup Mix
Some of my recipes call for onion soup mix. I've used Goodman's Low Sodium Onion Soup Mix, which I find in the kosher foods section of my local Safeway. However the last time I looked for it there wasn't any there. I'm not sure if they are no longer stocking it or they were just out. You can easily make your own mix anyway. And it's even lower than the Goodman's in sodium. You can use this the same as you would a one serving envelope of one of the commercial brands (some brands make multiple servings per envelope).
Mixed with a pint of sour cream, it makes a good low sodium dip. Make sure you read the sour cream labels though, the amount of sodium varies widely. The lowest I've seen is the Breakstone regular, with 10 mg per 2 tablespoons.
1 T Minced Onion
1 t Sodium Free Beef Bouillon
1/2 t Onion Powder
1/8 t Black Pepper
1/8 t Paprika
Combine all ingredients and store in an airtight jar or bag.
Yield: 1 Servings

Marcia,
The second post recipe which makes a lot the last ingredient (onion salt) the amount is unclear. Could you clarify this for us? Also, I had no luck getting the recipe from family oven.

Here's a really easy copycat recipe that has been given a five star rating:
Lipton Dry Onion Soup Mix
1/4 cup dried minced onion
2 tbsp instant low or no sodium beef bouillon powder
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
Combine all together. This makes the equivalent of 1 package soup mix.

I found a lot of the soup mixes. And if you put in "salt free mixes" you will get more than you will ever need. These range from herb mixes, chili and taco seasonings, to making your own Mrs. Dash.
These recipes rock!
Answer this QuestionQuestion: Onion Soup Alternative?
There are so many recipes with onion soup mix in them but I am allergic to MSG, which it contains. Does anyone know of an alternative to onion soup mix? Thanks.

3/4 cup dried minced onion
1/3 cup beef bouillon granules
1/4 cup onion powder
1/4 teaspoon sugar
1/4 teaspoon celery seed
That makes four batches, courtesy Quick Cooking magazine. Of course you have to find a bouillon that doesn't have MSG, but they're out there.

Thank you Karen. I had found one bouillon granular but now it seems to have disappered from my stores shelf. I know they do exist so I'll keep trying.
I had found an alternative onion mix at a bulk food store but it was very salty. I'll try this. Thanks again.

A: You will find the “Best If Used By” date on the back of the clear cello bag near the bottom, along with the lot code number. Note, this is not truly an expiration date. The mixes will never “spoil”, but dry ingredients will continue to dry and, over time, lose some of their flavor and visual appeal.
Commercially packaged dry soup mixes are usually marked with one of three dates: Best By, Best If Used By, or Best When Used By. Those all say and mean the same thing, which is not necessarily, by the way, when it's no longer safe to eat. In other words, they're not expiration dates.
