Childhood[]
Following her parents' deaths during childhood, Redfield and possibly her older brother, Chris, grew up at the Raccoon City Orphanage, which at the time was being operated by the Umbrella Corporation. Though not at the time aware her fellow residents were being taken away for experimentation, Redfield suspected the staff were covering up illegal activities. As she grew older, Redfield left the orphanage - either being fostered, transferred or simply being old enough to live on her own - and left Raccoon City behind while her brother stayed. Her experiences at the orphanage still plagued her mind, however, and she became obsessed with investigating Umbrella to the point of harming her relationship with Chris, who saw her as a raving conspiracy theorist.
Raccoon City incident[]
In September 1998, Raccoon City suffered an outbreak of T-virus, a bioweapon being developed by Umbrella within the city. While officially being reported on as a flu-like disease, Redfield's network claimed to have evidence of Umbrella's involvement. Concerned for her brother, Redfield travelled back to Raccoon City to meet with Chris, who had started a career in law enforcement. Redfield hitchhiked into town with a truck driver, which was disrupted by a collision with a woman on the highway who seemed to vanish.
Finally arriving in the city, Claire approached her brother's house, much to his surprise. Unfortunately, Chris dismissed her findings as conspiratorial delusion, and left when his team was called off on a mission. At some point, Claire was attacked by a sickly woman in the early stages of zombification and began a search for her brother, Chris.
As the city fell into chaos, Claire met rookie cop Leon S. Kennedy. The two sought refuge within the walls of the Raccoon Police Station, where they both geared up and encountered another survivor, Chief Irons. After the trucker from earlier (now infected) crashed in front of the gates of the R.P.D., Leon was instructed to lock the gates as the loud explosion and bright fire drew a horde of zombies to their location. The mass of zombies slowly but surely managed to break their way into the station, leading the three to attempt their escape through the station's basem*nt and parking garage, where they were attacked by the trucker's now-zombified Doberman.
Eventually, Claire managed to return to the orphanage she had grown up in, alongside Leon. Although the two encountered a Licker within. Seeking answers, she used the Heart Key to unlock a secret door in one of the rooms. This hidden passage led them down to one of Umbrella's laboratories, where she uncovered film reels and documents unveiling the companies experiments on many children, including Lisa Trevor and the Ashford Twins under William Birkin's supervision.
Deeper into the lab, Clare and Leon managed to reunite with her brother Chris, before boarding a train out of the city where they were attacked by a near-unrecognizable Birkin, who had been infected with the G-Virus.

Further notes[]
- The casting sheet for Claire describes her as:
"Beautiful." Claire grew up in an orphanage with her brother, CHRIS, in a strange sh*thole place called "Raccoon City". She often saw strange things in the orphanage, like a scary little girl with a sack over her head. Kids would often disappear and the staff would say they'd been adopted, but Claire doesn't buy it. As an adult, Claire has gotten away from Raccoon City, but she goes back to try and convince Chris (now a cop) to leave. While there, a zombie outbreak causes chaos. It turns out that the mysterious "Umbrella Corporation" has a virus get out that is causing the chaos. They plan to destroy the city in order to keep their secret. As Claire and Chris fight to escape with their lives, they realize that the missing children from their orphanage were being used in experiments.
