Syracuse's TV Landscape Shifts: CBS Station Faces Technical Turmoil After Rebranding
A bold move by a Syracuse television station has left viewers in a state of flux. CNY Central's WTVH CBS 5, a beloved local channel, underwent a transformation on December 1, 2025, rebranding as WKOF CBS 5. The station assured viewers that the change would be seamless, especially for those watching via cable, satellite, or streaming services like YouTube TV, Hulu + Live TV, Sling, and DirecTV Stream.
But here's where the controversy begins. Despite the station's promises, not all viewers experienced a smooth transition. CNY Central acknowledged that some viewers faced issues accessing the new WKOF signal. On Verizon FiOS, while the picture was intact, the program guide was inaccurate, leaving a frustrated customer after hours of unsuccessful troubleshooting. And on Spectrum, customers were directed to channels 2 or 1256, only to encounter a black screen. The frustration was palpable, with one Spectrum customer expressing their disappointment, "The owners' promise of a seamless transition hasn't been our reality."
The situation gets even more intriguing. Over-the-air viewers with antennas can tune into WKOF, but they must rescan their channels to continue enjoying CBS in the Syracuse area. Previously, WTVH was available on Channel 5.1, which now broadcasts Roar programming, while local CBS programming has shifted to digital channel 15.1.
CNY Central, which operates NBC 3 (WSTM), CW 6 (WSTQ), and CBS 5, is part of the Sinclair Broadcast Group. Interestingly, another Sinclair-owned station in Nevada also changed its call letters and signal on the same day. The reasons behind these simultaneous changes remain undisclosed.
As the dust settles, CNY Central works diligently to resolve the issues, updating program guides and apologizing for the inconvenience. Meanwhile, CBS fans can still access their favorite shows via streaming services like Fubo TV, DirecTV, and Hulu + Live TV.
And this is the part that might spark debate: Was the station's rebranding strategy rushed, or did they underestimate the technical challenges? Share your thoughts in the comments below. Are you a Syracuse resident affected by this change? Let us know your experience!
